Arequipa has social help centers for handicapped, abandoned and orphaned children and also homes for the elderly. They have many necessities which can not be provided by the State, That’s why the voluntary help of foreigners is very important and valuable for these centers.

Here is a list with the main social help centers.

Handicapped girls home "San José Benito Cotolengo". It is directed by misionary nuns of the congregation Verbo Encarnado, which are financed exclusively with the support of charitable people.

They have approximately 20 girls who have are mentally retarded and physically handicapped.

Volunteers can help in labors of feeding, dressing, rehabilitation exercises and others

Ophaned and Abandoned ChildrenHome "Antonieta Meo". This is located in Chuquibamba, a town 5 hours from Arequipa by bus. It shelters more than 30 abandoned and orphaned children. Volunteers can help with school reinforcement in Mathematics, Language, English, and handicrafts.

"Instituto Chávez de la Rosa". This institution shelters orphan children from newborns until they are 8 years old.

Volunteers can help with nursing and feeding labors, games, and helping with school homework.
